I was taught a valuable lesson this morning.
I was in the gym changing rooms when someone mentioned there had been an accident on the motorway and the junction that I would normally exit was shut until 4pm
An elderly lady started smiling and chatting to me, I must admit whilst politely responding to her questions my thoughts were still preoccupied by my route home. I soon realised that she wanted to talk further and when I gave her my full attention I realised she was so sad, lonely and with health issues that were only elevated by swimming.
She told me she cut back on other luxuries to enable her afford the gym membership as she knew she was guaranteed to see and speak to people there. She told me about the loved ones she had lost recently and tears filled her eyes. I felt overwhelmed with emotion for her. When we parted company she thanked me for listening to her and making her day as she would soon be going home to a silent house.
I only spent 15 mins with this lady but she made a huge impact on the rest of my day. We take so many things for granted and I spent the drive home feeling grateful for that meeting that lady this morning and helping me recognising that taking time for others in our busy lives benefits everyone.
What are you grateful for today?
